The home that currently hosts Lucy’s Place, A Bed & Breakfast with Gardens, was originally built in 1878. A kitchen addition was added in 1898. The home was converted to a duplex in the early part of the 1900’s.

The home was purchased in the 1930’s by Conrad and Lucy Shovick and their nine children. Conrad died shortly after that, leaving Lucy, a 5’1” ball of fire, alone to raise her nine children. Lucy worked as a maid in local hotels, operated a bakery in the home, raised vegetables and fruit on the property that she sold on the front sidewalk, provided “babysitting” services for working women in the 1950s and 1960s before “daycare” became a household word, and dressed up as Big Bird and marched in the annual Apple Festival Parade to the delight of thousands of children. Lucy died in 1991 and the house sat unoccupied until the current owners saw it in their search to open a bed and breakfast.

The house was completely renovated, beginning in 1998: the house was gutted to the studs, bare copper wires removed, and lovingly rebuilt. New wiring, plumbing, heating, windows, sheetrock, insulation, roof and recreation of open porches torn off in the 1950’s. A two car garage, workshop and great room were added in 2003.

The home is now a profitable bed & breakfast, with four guest rooms, each with a private bathroom with double whirlpool tub. An owner’s suite and additional bedroom provide more private space than other bed and breakfasts currently on the market.
