1794 Grist Mill Complete with Original Machinery
The Kline's Mill still houses the original equipment installed when it was first built back in the 1790's and has remained virtually undisturbed since its last years of operation. Its construction was based on Oliver Evans's continuous milling process of converting grain into flour. Some believe that this was the beginning of integrated and automated manufacturing, which led to the modern materials handling of today. The mill's waterwheel transferred power to elevators, conveyors, cleaners, grinders, coolers, sifters and packers, allowing the mill to be operated by only two men. Underneath the mill's gambrel roof, you will find two floors of post and beam construction built on the original log over stone building. A Millwright Engineer stated that he had not seen a mill incorporating Oliver Evans design as complete as Kline's Mill, which may be the most important grist mill in the U.S. and a great study for architecture and engineering students.
