World Record Elk Antlers Sell
at Auction for $121,000

United Country – Colorado Brokers Inc. Auctions
Collectibles from John Rozick’s Elk Saloon

October 3, 2016 (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – It once held the world record from the Boone and Crockett Club as the largest American elk antlers and now a piece of American history is in the hands of its new owner. The Plute Bull recently sold at auction for $121,000 in Crested Butte, Colo.

The Plute Bull’s history dates back to 1899 when a coal miner named John Plute hunted the bull elk in Dark Canyon. Plute regularly hunted and brought meat back to town in Crested Butte. He lived in a boarding house above John Rozick’s bar and used the meat as payment. Plute eventually passed away in 1922 after getting thrown from his horse and suffering a head injury. With no heirs, the antlers remained with the Rozick family.

“Plute allowed John Rozick to hang the antlers in his bar,” said Gary Hubbell, broker/auctioneer for United Country – Colorado Brokers, Inc. “After John Plute passed away, the antlers remained with the Rozick family, who passed them down to John’s step-son, Ed Rozman. Ed was a good caretaker of the trophy and eventually had the antlers measured. Though many people tried to persuade him to duplicate the antlers and commercialize them, he never did.”

Although not measured until 1955, the bull scored a 442 3/8 on the Boone and Crockett scale and officially held the world record in 1961. At its greatest spread, it measures more than 51 inches with seven points on one side and eight on the other. It held the world record for more than 30 years.

The online auction ended September 21 and was conducted by Hubbell and his team. In addition to the Plute Bull, several other antiques and collectibles from John Rozick’s Elk Saloon were sold. The items included a 1899 nickel slot machine, 1891 cash register and sleeves of clay poker chips from the early 1900’s. The bull’s new owner plans to leave it in Crested Butte to let people enjoy it for years to come.

“At the end of the auction, the buyer and I nervously sat there and watched the seconds tick away,” said Hubbell. “Finally, the screen timed out and the auction was over. I congratulated the buyer. He’s a local guy who has done well in life, a passionate elk hunter like myself, who found the Plute Bull to be a fascinating piece of Colorado history.”

Today, the Plute Bull is the second largest typical elk behind a bull elk hunted in Arizona’s White Mountains by cattle rancher Alonzo Winters. The elk beat the Plute Bull by a mere quarter inch, scoring 442 5/8 on the Boone and Crockett Club scale.

Prior to the Plute Bull auction, Hubbell worked with the Rozman’s to produce a video for prospects to learn more about the bull’s history. View the video here.
