Alderson is a community of just over 1,000 people that is situated in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Though technically part of Greenbrier County, its boundaries straddle the border of Monroe County as well. Alderson is served by State Highways 3, 12 and 63.

When Alderson was subsequently founded, it was named in honor of John Alderson, a minister who helped bring the Baptist church to the American frontier.
