Billings, established in 1882, was named for Frederick Billings, president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city is nicknamed "the Magic City" as it developed "like magic" during the railroad's westward expansion.

Cultural activities in the area include Billings Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, which presents outstanding concerts. One of the most successful groups who sponsor live performances in the city is the Billings Community Concert Association.
