This beautiful region at the
western edge of the fabled Catskill Mountains is well known for year-round
sports activities. Anglers stream in to test their luck and hone their skills in
Oquaga Creek, Cannonsville Reservoir and the Beaverkill River, reputedly the
first stream in America to test the dry fly. The West Branch of the Delaware
River is a beautiful recreational river to fish, boat, canoe, swim, tube and
just sit back and enjoy. Nearby streams such as the Beaverkill host great trout
fishing. Private lakes in the area include Oquaga Lake, Columbia Lake, Crystal
Lake, Lauren Lake, Silver Lake, Blueberry Lake and others.
Hunting is excellent, as the
rolling hills and deep woods support high populations of deer and wild turkey,
as well as an occasional bear. Grouse, rabbit and other small game are
plentiful, and migrating ducks and geese add seasonal excitement. Canoeing,
rafting and swimming are summer favorites, while cross-country skiing,
snowmobiling and ice fishing keep the winter active. Golf courses, bridle paths,
tennis courts, hiking trails and other developed facilities are numerous.
