Garnett Kansas Area History

"America's Hometown"
A Rich Sense Of Tradition & Classic American Family Values

Our town site was selected in 1856 by George W. Cooper, the owner of the land. After finding a desirable location for the seat of a new county, Cooper traveled back to his home in Louisville, KY, and organized a town company to settle the region.

The company was headed up by W.A. Garnett, a prominent Louisville businessman, and as the president of the new organization, the town was named in his honor.

A week after the town was platted, another town site was submitted to the local probate judge that sat just to the north of Garnett.

This adjacent town was initially called Troy, but within only three short months, it had been absorbed into the growing limits of Garnett.
The Louisville company had brought with them equipment for a new saw and flouring mill, and began building homes for the mill's workers immediately upon their arrival. This foresight allowed the new city to attract residents quickly.
