Shawnee, the seat of Pottawatomie County, is located in central Oklahoma just 30 minutes east of Oklahoma City. The area surrounding Shawnee was settled after the Civil War by a number of tribes that the federal government had removed to Indian Territory. The Sac and Fox were among the first groups to be given land in the immediate area. They were soon followed by the Kickapoo, Shawnee and Pottawatomi Indians. Many members of these tribes still reside in and around Shawnee today.

Shawnee is an official Main Street community, which means that we are dedicated to the revitalization of our historic downtown.
