And just how did Wildwood get its name?
According to tradition, in 1877 a crew of workmen and a surveyor
were putting in a telegraph line south of Ocala. The surveyor was
required to report in from time to time, so when the surveyor called
in and the office asked "Where are you?" he paused and the answer he
gave was, "I don't know, except in the wild woods."
Lakes and rivers in Sumter County include Panasoffkee Lake, which
covers some 4,460 acres with public boat access and fishing for
largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker, warmouth, catfish and
sunfish. It connects to the 157-mile-long Withlacoochee River, which
flows out to the Gulf of Mexico. The 125-acre Black Lake specializes
in bluegill and black crappie, and connects to Lake Miona. The
418-acre Lake Miona features good fishing for largemouth bass,
bluegill and redear sunfish. |
