Mike Gerbaz is the rare Aspen Realtor with deep, long-standing ties to the Aspen community. His great-grandfather emigrated to the Roaring Fork Valley in the late 1880’s, leaving Mike the legacy of a 4th-generation Aspenite. Mike grew up skiing, hunting, ranching, roping, and raising horses. A 1977 graduate of Aspen High School, Mike attended the University of Denver, where he took night classes in real estate finance while working as a real estate broker at the venerable Van Schaack firm. He was first licensed in real estate in 1981.

After returning to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1986, Mike worked at Mason & Morse Real Estate and other firms, making a name selling ranches, horse properties, vacant land, and luxury homes. His experience as a youth, raising hay and quarter horses, came in handy as he guided clients to their new acreages and horse properties from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. Through the years Mike has represented some of the most successful development projects in the Roaring Fork Valley, including River Ranch, Blue Creek Ranch, Spring Park Meadows, Spring Park Ranches and Spring Park Mesa, and he also assembled the parcels that now comprise the Willits neighborhood.

Mike has a deep and abiding interest in bloodstock quarter horses, as he breeds and trains AQHA horses with lines such as Skipper W, Three Bars, and Frenchman. That interest turned into a new venture, as he launched Working Horse Magazine, now one of the pre-eminent publications for quality quarter horses for roping, reining, working cow horse, ranch versatility, and all-around cowhorses.

As Aspen-area real estate firms changed names and consolidated with other companies, he realized that Aspen real estate had become too corporate and impersonal and he hardly knew the hundreds of other brokers in the firm. Mike had worked with Gary Hubbell of United Country Colorado Brokers in advertising Gary’s horse property listings in Working Horse. Mike decided to affiliate with UCCB, he says. “I like working in a smaller brokerage where we all know each other and we can do business on a much more personal basis. However, I’m also really excited about United Country’s technology package. We’re able to market our properties with a lot more horsepower than we ever had at the big firms. United Country’s websites and marketing strategies are far more developed than the average ‘big box’ real estate franchise.”
Mike has two college-age daughters and a son who just graduated high school. He enjoys team roping, skiing, hunting, and raising quarter horses. He lives on a small ranch near Aspen.
